Quito is the perfect spot to visit cinemas, theaters, museums and any other place that brings together the cultural wealth of this city from pre-Columbian times to the present. Immerse yourself in art, archaeology, and culture by visiting one of what we consider to be the best museums in Quito.

Mitad del Mundo

This is a one-of-a-kind museum, where you will the learn absolutely everything about the middle of the world, the equator and the country’s culture. The purpose of the museum is to expose tourist the reasons why Ecuador is considered a pluri-national, intercultural and multilingual country.

Within the Mitad del Mundo City there are two principal exhibitions:  Guayasamín, showing art works of the famous Ecuadorian painter Oswaldo Guayasamín and El Pabellón de Francia, which exhibits all the information about the French Geodesic Mission that contributed to the discovery of the equatorial line. The Intiñan Museum close to the Middle of the World Monument is a small private museum with fun activities related to the equatorial line and Ecuadorian history.

Other tourist attractions are the Planetarium, a miniature replica of the old colonial Quito, and the Insectarium: where dissected insects are exposed and explained. In addition to these permanent attractions, weekends and festive dates shows music festivals, dance performances and other artistic expressions in the town square.

Quito City Museum

Originally a hospital from 1565 to 1974, The City’s Museum is an important cultural museum that details the historical life of Quito from its colonial beginnings until today. The museum’s rooms and exhibits are designed to mimic a journey through time and was built on the renovated San Juan de Dios Hospital.

Amongst the main attractions of this museum are the architecture of the building, the permanent and temporary art exhibitions, and some beautiful cozy locations with gardens and arches that can be reserved for private events.

Visitors can observe scenes, paintings, dioramas, wax figures and even hear sound effects that detail how the life has been over the years in Ecuador.

Guayasamín Museum

Oswaldo Guayasamín is one of the most important contemporary artists in Ecuador. His museum is located in a residential neighborhood on the outskirts of Quito. Guayasamín gave great value to art and wanted to leave a legacy and an artistic patrimonial heritage. Throughout his life, he collected objects of pre-Columbian and Colonial art that were donated to the Ecuadorian people when he passed away.
