La Mitad del Mundo (the middle of the world) is one of the most popular places to visit in Ecuador. The attraction, which highlights the location of the Equator line, has a monument where tourists and locals can take pictures while standing in two hemispheres at once! Below we give you some tips we think you should consider before heading to this attraction.
Make Sure to Stay in Quito
The attraction is located approximately 15 kilometers from Quito, which is only a 45-minute drive from the city. Since the attraction is so close, we recommend you do a day trip from Quito instead of having to find a place to stay close to the Mitad del Mundo.
Get the exact address
Ask our hotel staff for a city map and mark the exact point from which to get the bus to La Mitad del Mundo. There are two options to get there, the first one is to get a bus in Avenida Amazonas, the other option is to catch a bus in Ofelia station. If you have trouble finding the direct bus, you can catch one to Ofelia ($0.25 USD) and then change for the bus to La Mitad del Mundo ($0.15 USD). The ride is about an hour. If you have the budget, you may want to catch a taxi instead ($15 USD each way).
Attractions you shouldn’t miss
The attractions you cannot miss are: the various pavilions dotted around the complex to learn about the nations that helped Charles-Marie de La Condamine in his quest to map the equator. Don’t forget the viewing platform and the ethnographic museum at the top of the monument, which offers an interesting look at the indigenous groups of Ecuador and of course the chocolate museum inside the Mitad del Mundo complex.
The Intiñan museum close to the complex features Ecuador’s native culture and customs, and visitors can participate in a variety of funny activities designed to demonstrate interesting physical phenomena unique to the Ecuadorian region.
Finally, on weekends and holidays there are always local music festivals, dance performances and other artistic expressions in the town square.
Take your Passport
Tourists who visit Museo Intiñan can have their passports stamped to prove that they have visited the middle of the world. So, if you’d like to collect cool stamps around the world, don’t forget your passport!
